JC or the big guy in the sky

2009 March 10

What happened to reverence? When did reverence for God take leave of Christians?

In my years on the internet, I have seen Jesus Christ reduced to “JC” or God referred to as “the big guy in the sky.”  And these terms are used by those who claim Christ as their Savior.  Just yesterday, I saw someone post on their blog “JC” in reference to our Lord Jesus.  I cannot imagine it is too time consuming to type out “Jesus Christ.” This reference to Him is simply an indication of how one lacks reverence for God and referring to Him as “JC” is crude and shows a lack of understanding of who He really is.

In days gone by, extreme reverence was paid to our Lord and Savior for He is Holy and perfect who gave His life to save us sinners. We bowed before Him in holy worship and uttered His name with reverence and awe. Now He is referred to by some as “JC” or the “big guy in the sky.” I even saw a ministry van who had painted on their van “Jesus is my homeboy and heaven is my hood.”

Jesus Christ is the Holy God in the flesh who gave His life as a ransom for us sinners. We should treat Him as such. He is NOT “JC” but Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior.

Thanks for the post Tishrei. I could not agree more. He is my Savior and without Him the world would not be created and I would not be here. He is not “JC” or “Daddy” or “Pops” or any other name of the sort. Do I have an intimate relationship with him? Do I talk to Him daily? Don’t people have “pet names” for those they speak with so frequently? All answers are “Yes”. But the Messiah doesn’t need pet names! He needs honor and reverence. We address others generally based on our respect for them. We should do the same for our God and Savior.

P.S. Told you I would be back. I really enjoy your blog.

Hi OkieRob, thanks for your nice comment. I completely agree with you — pet names are not for God. He gave us a name we can use and it’s an intimate name – Father.

p.s. I tried to see if you have a blog here but it appears you do not I wanted to read your writings! :) If you have enjoyed or gained anything from my blog, then the time I spend on it is worth it and His will is being done!
