Your Authority Over Your Life! Oh Really?

2009 March 5

Authority?

I have read on different Christian sites on the internet as well as personally hearing Christians speak that there is a belief that Christians have authority over their lives. It has also been taught that the authority that Christians have exceed God’s authority when it comes to the matter of one’s life. Not only is this a heretical and possibly blasphemous statement, it displays an utter lack of understanding of God’s power, sovereignty and majesty.

A born again Christian should be very careful about declaring that their own power over their life exceeds that of the God who created the universe with His spoken word. The fact that God allows someone to teach such heretical messages is a testament to His graciousness and mercy.

Make no mistake, man does not have the power or authority to override God’s direction. This becomes clear when one reads the Word of God and sees that God directs lives over His saints (both in the Old Testament and New Testament) as He chooses. I have recently read someone’s teaching that a Christian’s authority is such that it exceeds “God’s plan for your life.” This is probably one of the more heretical teachings that come out of some Christians and to be perfectly blunt, it is arrogant and presumptuous to declare that we have power that exceeds that of the Sovereign God who has our very life in His hands and the very breath that we take is in His control. We can look to Jonah, one of God’s Old Testament Saints, who attempted to take authority over his own life. He ended up in the belly of a fish and unpleasant events continued for him. God is sovereign and He will carry out what He will despite our perceived power or authority over our lives. Our authority over our lives is only what He will allow.

Make no mistake, Christians do not have power that will exceed God’s and that includes authority over one’s own life. All born again believers in the Sovereign God should think very carefully before having the incredible moxie to teach or declare that a Christian’s authority over their lives exceeds that of God. The very hairs on our head are numbered and the day of our death is appointed.

God is sovereign and He will accomplish what He will accomplish despite a false perception of authority that exceeds His.
