Lazy Christianity

2009 August 18

Christianity is described as a relationship with God.  In today’s soceity, we seem to have less time despite fast food to go, delivery right to our homes, automation, transportation, etc.   With all our conveniences, we spend less time on the aspects of life that matters than people of days gone by who lacked our conveniences.  Sadly, Christians today for the most part, practice lazy Christianity.

Most Christians, if asked point blank “is God important in your life” will answer with a yes. But the behavior of most Christians belies the words they speak. Many Christians have not read their Bible from cover to cover and if they have, it may have been once or twice. They do not spend time reading His word. People simply don’t take the time to hear from God. They rely on others to teach them about God whether it is through listening to sermons on television or their pastor’s sermon. God speaks directly to us through His word.

Prayer is a means to communicate with God. It is us communicating with Him. And for most Christians, prayer is the limit of their relationship with Him. We can petition Him with our requests, praise Him, give thanks and ask for forgiveness. However, this is our communication with Him, not His communication with us.  It is a one sided relationship.

Reading the Bible is His way of communicating directly with us. God has revealed Himself to us through the scriptures. If we want to know Him personally, we read His word to us. God’s word to us is not a one time read. All that He wants to reveal to us about Himself is found in His word which is living and active and not merely a book to be read once or twice. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Heb 4:12

We all choose and act upon what is important to us. It does not matter what we say, it matters what we do for what we do speaks volumes as to what is important to us. Our relationship with God is not one sided, at least it should not be. We speak to Him through prayer. He speaks to us through His word. If we are not spending time in His word, then there are more important things in our lives than hearing from God. Today, Christians generally do not know the scripture first hand. They know what they’ve been taught.  Fast paced Christianity for a fast paced life-style.

I have wondered how the body of Christ has gotten to where we are now. There is no time for God except for Sundays and prayers. Maybe it is because we live in a “it’s all about me” type of society, what can God do for me. Or maybe we’re simply too busy.  It seems people just don’t want to take the time to get to know God. He’s there when we need Him but until then, a weekly sermon will suffice.

We cannot know anyone without spending time with them and that includes God.

If we don’t take the time to get to really know Him, He is not going to leave us. We speak to Him in prayer and He speaks to us through His word. It is sad that Christians, for the most part, have chosen to settle for much less.

      Hi Jacklein,

I know what you mean. I think some habits are hard to break and it takes a conscious effort to make a change in our life. What really got to me one time is someone said at a bible study I attended “if you have time to watch TV, then you have time to read your bible. I just depends what is more important to you.” That was the leader of the bible study making that statement to all of us because some of us were not as prepared as we should have been. I’ve never forgotten that admonishment and it’s something I am glad I took to heart.

      Thanks for stopping by. :)

I’m one of them too. There was a time in my life, I was hunger for God’s word. I would set up a time every day for God. I was happy. Later, something happened, now I’m back to the way I was before. I’m ashamed but that doesn’t really push me to go back. I know in my heart that God is waiting for me to hear Him. You’re right, we make too many excuses.

    Hi Linda,

What I have found that works for me as to reading His Word is to set aside time on my calendar. Early in the morning works best for me before I start my day. That’s one of the reasons I wrote this post because I, too, found myself in the sad position that I wrote about.

    God Bless,

      Hi Stacy,

I think we have all been where you’re at … well, I guess I should speak for myself only, been there. I read somewhere (I don’t remember where) that we do have the time but we just don’t want to give something up. Maybe it’s watching a television program, or something. What I have found that works best for me is that I get up a half hour earlier than I normally would to go to work and spend that half hour with Him and in His word. That doesn’t mean that I don’t read in the evening but if I don’t because I’m busy, I have already spent time with Him in the morning before my day starts. For me and my lifestyle, it makes my day just go by so much nicer. Everybody is different and what works for me may be different for others.

I’m glad this post gave you food for thought :) … spending time with Him in His word on a daily basis sure has changed my walk big time.

      Tanks for stopping by!
