Recommend – The Theology Program

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2Ti 2:15 KJVR)
Today’s recommendation is The Theology Program at Reclaiming the Mind Ministries. The program is an intensive theology program for lay people who do not have time to attend seminary. Michael Patton, the director and one of the instructors of the program, received a theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary.
The course is an online course that is intense and will require dedication. It is a program that takes the approach of “doing theology” rather than listening to a sermon or reading an online paper and answering questions. The courses are set up beginning with Introduction to Theology, Bibliology and Hermeneutics, Trinitarianism, Humanity and Sin, Soteriology. Ecclesiology and Eschatology. Each group has 10, 1 hour long lectures, not sermons.
Why take an intensive course such as this theology program when we have our pastors, bible studies and different materials that we can access and learn from? When we go to church or to bible studies or even access great commentaries, we do gain knowledge but we do not learn learn “how to do theology.” This program teaches the students how to do theology as they do in seminary. Instead of being taught what to believe, these courses teaches us how to understand why we believe as we do. What is the history of the Trinity? The word “Trinity” is not found in the bible. What council took up the issue of the Trinity and why? Is our Bible the same as originally written? What is the history of our bible and how do we know we have the right books? How do we know it’s inspired by God? As Christians, we know we have the correct books in the Bible and we know the Bible is inspired. This is what we have been taught and what we believe but can we explain why we believe as we do?
These courses are not sermons. They are courses designed to teach lay people theology as taught in seminary. It is not ‘dummied down’ for lay people but a shorted version of what is taught in seminary.
Students have two options. One it to take the course for free. They offer a paid course that will require more work as it is interactive with the instructors and includes homework that is turned in and graded. It also includes required reading.
This is an excellent program for any serious student of the Word of God.
