Our own Amazing Grace

2009 December 18

Amazing Grace Indeed

I wanted to end this week with a positive ending to my last few posts.  Most of us have probably heard the story behind the writing of the song “Amazing Grace.”  John Newton worked on a slave trade ship.  After coming to faith in Christ, he penned the words to Amazing Grace.  This is the Amazing Grace that God worked in John Newton’s life.  Yet each of us has our own personal story of God’s Amazing Grace.  It is an amazing grace indeed that God would save man.  It is an amazing grace that not only would God choose to save man but when we realize that in order for man to be saved, the Word made Flesh, Jesus, came to live among sinners.  And more amazing, He willingly sacrificed Himself on the cross, bore our sin upon Himself so that we may be free of the bondage of sin.  Simply AMAZING!

We each have our own story – our own “Amazing Grace.”  John Newton’s was from slave trader to redemption in Christ.  That’s an Amazing Grace.  Maybe this Christmas we can reflect on our own personal “Amazing Grace” that God granted us.

As we go about our holiday preparations in anticipation of celebrating the birth of our Redeemer, I hope that we don’t forget that those around us that do not greet us as we might wish remember that they have not experienced the Amazing Grace that we have received.  I am thankful beyond words that God sent someone to a wretch like me to share the Good News so that I too could be Redeemed.

This Christmas is not about us.  The meaning of Christmas is about Jesus’ PURPOSE for coming to man and that is to save the lost.  We have already received that gift of redemption.  The lost are still in need.  I for one will not avoid the lost but will seek them out.

It is indeed an Amazing Grace.

Below are the lyrics to the song “Amazing Grace.”  We we once lost and blind but now we have been found and we see and how precious is His grace.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The world shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun refuse to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

    Another rendition to this song in the chorus goes..” My Chains Are Gone, I`ve Been Set Free, My God My Savior Has Randsomed Me, And like A Flood His Mercies Reigns, Unending Love Amazing Grace.” by Chris Tomlinmaging

    God`s grace is indeed Amazing.

    Tishrei,

    I love listening to “Amazing Grace” because it is another time to reflect on God’s amazing grace for me….. It’s amazing that God is able to work in absolutely any situation…..

    What we might see as a limitation in witnessing is nothing in God’s eyes — and yet, I think of how Jesus witnessed to everyone around Him….. There were as many reactions to His preaching as there were people that heard Him….. Some turned to Him in repentance right away, while others took more convincing, and still others hated Him enough to kill Him.

    Not every one was saved, even though God Almighty did the preaching….. And yet, God faithfully continues to witnesses to everyone day after day, if they care to notice it….. That, in and of itself, is amazing love and grace.

    Our witnessing may be rejected by the lost this Christmas, and yet, that is not reason to quit being a living witness all of our lives….. Jesus came to SEEK and to SAVE the lost….. We might easily find the lost — but sometimes the saving part takes a lot of patience and time — not to mention a real love.

    I am so glad you have shared this post….. Thank you. :)

      Hi Margaret,

      Amazing Grace has to be oen of my favorites — the words so speak to what He did for us.

      And what an excellent point when we may get discouraged when we witness — Jesus Himself witnessed to everyone but not everyone was saved.

      Seriously, thank you for that reminder.

    I gotta admit, that is something that I sure can’t get my mind around :)

    God’s Grace is truly AMAZING!

      Yeah, I know what you mean. I think eternity is not something that we humans have a capacity of really grasping. But it sure is awesome to behold, that’s for sure.
