End of the World

Asteroid (4179) Toutatis

Last night I was watching a National Geographic video on asteroids and meteors.  I learned something I did not know.  While I have always known that they were out there and there have been some “close calls,” I had no idea how much traffic is out there.  It’s simply astonishing.  As one expert described it, it’s like a freeway with intersections with no on and off ramps.  As I watched this video, I admit that it frightened me a little bit.  They discussed how it would take one large meteor to come slamming to earth to end life was we know it.  If a meteor the size of a mountain (and they have tracked those), entered our atmosphere, it would heat up as it passed through the atmosphere and as it slammed into earth, it would be like having 10 times the amount of atomic bombs the world possessed in WWII going off in one spot.  It would wipe out all life globally.  The force of the impact would be cataclysmic as it would set off earthquakes globally, heat up the atmosphere to that of an oven set on broil and the dust would block all sunlight virtually leaving earth in darkness.  Forget what you see on those Hollywood movies – we’d be toast.

The video was 45 minutes long and towards the middle of the video, I brought my mind back to scripture.  God created the heavens and the earth, the planets, galaxies and all that is in it.  The massive traffic of meteors and asteroids that crosses the same path as earth crosses and yet, we do not collide.  Why?

In February of 2006, I had a near miss.  I was driving to work on a rainy day, the first rain of the season so the roads were really slick.  I was on the freeway in the fast lane.  Due to rush hour traffic, I was at a dead stop. There were cars in front of me, behind me and to my right.  To my left was a concrete wall.  I was literally stuck.  It’s an old freeway, actually one of the oldest in the country.  The traffic headed the other direction, coming towards me was elevated above me and there was only a wooden guardrail separating the north bound freeway traffic from the southbound traffic (the direction I was headed).  As I sat in my car waiting for the traffic to let up, I happened to look up and saw a car coming the opposite direction spin out of control on the slick freeway. Since the cars traveling in that direction were headed away from downtown, there was no traffic jam like I was stuck in.  The car spinning out of control was headed right at me with only a wooden guardrail between us.  The car slammed into the guardrail above me and started to tip over.  Had it tipped over, it would have landed right on top of my car and crushed me and my car.

It did not.  It was as if God put His hand down and tipped the car back upright on its side of the freeway and prevented it from crushing me to death.  No one was hurt.  The driver of the car was shaken but not hurt and obviously neither was I.  God kept that car from landing on top of me.  I watched the whole thing happen and there was nothing I could do.  As I watched it tip over, I knew that in a moment, I would be taking my last breath.  I even remember thinking to myself that I would be taking my last breath as I watched that car tip over.  Fortunately I was wrong and God had other ideas  :)

As recently as 2004, it turns out that a huge block of rock was headed straight towards earth.  It never made the news.  I guess they did not want a global panic.  It came unbelievably close to us.  In fact it was as close as the satellites that orbit our earth.  Folks, that’s really, really, really close.  Yet, it kept on going and did not touch our atmosphere.  With the sheer amount of traffic out there that does cross the same path as earth, we should be getting hit.  The moon is full of craters.  Those craters are due to collisions with the meteor traffic that somehow misses us.  Like the car headed right towards me, tipping over the guardrail ready to crush me, God put His hand and stopped the car from landing on top of me.  He did the same with that meteor that missed us and who knows how many more He nudges out of earth’s path.

Man is now trying to come up with a way to steer off a large meteor from colliding with earth.  As of now, we don’t have the ability to save ourselves if one of those massive meteors such as the size of a mountain comes our way in a collision course with earth.  We can forget the Hollywood movie version of using a nuclear bomb to break it up.  While it may shatter the meteor, what would we do with all those radioactive rocks raining down on earth?  Let me tell you what I do know.  God has already told us how the end of ages will come about.  So while I was feeling some fright as I watched that video, I have none now.  Just as God stopped that car from tipping on top of me and killing me, He is in complete control over all that traffic out in space.  I saw His hand stop that car from tipping over – I would not have survived if it did.  There is no reason that car should not have landed on top of me.  By the same token, there is no way that with all that traffic in space, we should not be hit.  Yet, here we are.  We could put 1000 earths in the planet Jupiter and it would still have room for more 300 more earths.  Recently scientists were able to see the damage a large meteor caused when it collided with Jupiter.  Let’s just say that if what happened to Jupiter happened here, we would be wiped out if we were struck instead of Jupiter.

When the end of ages comes, and we don’t know when that is, we can turn to scripture and see how it will happen.  In the meantime, we can trust that God will prevent the earth from a massive collision that will wipe all life off the face of the earth.  When the time comes and it’s the end of ages, man will not be able to stop the hand of God.  As Christians, we do not have to fear.  God is in complete and utter control not only in our lives but is controlling all that traffic that crosses our path.  In the meantime, scientists will try and come up with a plan to keep our earth safe for ever and ever.  They have not factored God into their equation so they will fail.

    Tishrei,

I love your ending lines: “In the meantime, scientists will try and come up with a plan to keep our earth save for ever and ever. They have not factored God into their equation so they will fail.”…..

How very true….. Man is silly in his unbelief….. Just think how they are robbed of all peace as they scramble around in their anxiety.

I, too, have had a number of near misses in life, wherein I should not be here today….. To me, God is letting me know that He definitely is in control of all things….. Therefore, I surely can trust Him with today’s problem — and tomorrow’s.

    Block Lady T.,

Okay, first I have had direct contact with Christians on discussion boards that know exactly when the earth will end, so don’t tell me :-)

I’ve seen the type of shows you watched. They do their best to scare people.

Interesting that you mentioned our moon and Jupiter; two bodies in the heavens that attract these objects gravitationally rather than hitting the earth. I’ve always been fascinated with that.

Good post, buddy. I’m glad that car didn’t land on you.

    In Christ,

LOL, yeah, I know those that know exactly when the earth will end. They know when it will end, who the anti-christ will be.

I have a list of all the anti-christs that have come and gone that have been put forth but alas, so far they’ve been wrong. I’ll have to dig it up but I did a post on just that. It was kind of me musing about Christians spending all their time looking under every nook and cranny for the anti-christ, the end of the world and kind of forgetting that even Jesus said He did not know the day or the hour. Oh well :(

Me too, glad the car did not land on me. It was weird, I wasn’t even scared. I just sat there and watched it (not like I had any place I could go, LOL). But what was awesome about it is I saw it tip over towards me and then inexplicably tip back over away from me.

    Oh, my… I meant “BLOG Lady T.”

      HAHAHAHAHA …. that was funny.

Great post. I’m utterly confident of God’s sovereignty and peacefully know He holds my mortality and eternity!

    1. Tishrei

Thanks. Yep, you succinctly stated it in that God’s sovereignty holds us in eternity!!!
