Hi Richard, A lot of people have complained that I used this quote stating that I misused this quote because it was originally a quote against belief in God. Even so, the saying "Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities Can Make You Commit Atrocities" does not have to be used exactly in the context that it was initially penned. I don't understand folks feel that I am required to use it only in the context that it was was initially penned The saying absolutely fits the subject that I was writing about. It can be used in numerous situations. As such, I found the saying stated exactly what I wanted to convey in my post.

On the Voltaire quote ‘Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities Can Make You Commit Atrocities’. The longer citation is ‘Formerly there were those who said: You believe things that are incomprehensible, inconsistent, impossible because we have commanded you to believe them; go then and do what is unjust because we command it. Such people show admirable reasoning. Truly, whoever is able to make you absurd is able to make you unjust. If the God-given understanding of your mind does not resist a demand to believe what is impossible, then you will not resist a demand to do wrong to that God-given sense of justice in your heart. As soon as one faculty of your soul has been dominated, other faculties will follow as well. And from this derives all those crimes of religion which have overrun the world.’ From Sur les Miracles, following the ‘blessed David Hume’ on the question of miracles. Another relevant quote is from a letter to Frederik 11 was ‘Ours is without doubt the most ridiculous, the most absurd and the most bloody religion which has ever infected this world’. « La nôtre [religion] est sans contredit la plus ridicule, la plus absurde, et la plus sanguinaire qui ait jamais infecté le monde ».

Hi Lisa, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply -- I haven't been blogging but that really is no excuse for not answering you. But to answer your question, I am starting to blog again and I hope you will forgive me for not answering you sooner. I really have no excuse.

I’ll start of with your last sentence, “try it, you will be blessed.” I attend a messianic congregation and as such, Sabbath is observed. What I would like to point out is that the early Jewish believers continued to attend Temple, they met on the first day of the week as Christians. Instead of restating everything I said here, I would like to direct you to this post I wrote on Sabbath as it seems silly to rewrite what I said here. God Bless,

Amazing! So much truth with a tiny tare sown in it. Repeat of Gen 3: story. "Did God say you shall not..." Sundown to sundown according to Genesis 1 is original calender day. Earlier and latter Jewish faiths observed the 7th day sabbath in the temple. The congregating together on the first day of the week from house to house was to engage in ministry business in all cases cited in your blog- Paul collecting humanitarian materials for the believers in need in other places during the week. Note that they always continued to observe the 7th day sabbath and then pickup to leave after sabbath to spread the good news (ministry and outreach). The first day sabbath was not a question until Pope Constantine who, seeing the number of heathen converts in the church (they brought many of their rituals into the church and wanted to enforce them and to keep peace), needed to appease the heathens. History shows that this power (Pope at the time) effected the change of substituing the sun god which incidentally coincided with the rising of the "Son" day. Your conclusion as to you can do whatever you please substantiates that you wish and fact that man usurped the power of GOD to make their own laws without regard to what God had established. If you love me you will keep my commandments. think deeper and lean not to your own understanding but rather on the Maker of heaven and earth. I pray that it will come clear to you as well as others who believe the way you have written. God did not intend to set aside "a day" to honor the Lord, rather he set aside (sanctified and made it holy) the 7th day (sunset friday to sunset saturday) as a seal of creation and a rest day for human kind to honor the Lord. All the other six days were good but not with the same completeness blessing as the 7th day. Now why was mankind created, to worship God. So man should worship and honor God each moment they have breath. But there is the day that you must remember to end your work and rest with God - on the sabbath 7th day (according to God's instructions). In fact you will notice that this cycle completely rejuvenates mankind. It does not when other days like the first day or the 4th day is substituted for the 7th. Try it, you will be blessed.

Hi, Thanks for stopping by. I'm on a deadline which is why I haven't been on my blog. I would like to discuss this with you however, it's going to have to wait until the first part of next month before I will have the time to sit down and write a post about it and hopefully, you and I can discuss it. No, I don't get all worked up when someone doesn't agree with me so we can have a discussion without throwing cyber pots and pans at each other. 8) I did post something about sola scripture v. solo scripture and it does lightly touch on the subject that you are discussing. Click here to read that post. It's also a short post. Thanks for your kind words about this blog. I'll be back to this blog either next week or the week after.

Hi, I've just stumbled across this blog whilst doing research for my role as a teacher. Have read a couple of posts and found them to be well-written and a decent length (most are either too long, or too short). Personally I describe my Christianity as Charismatic Catholic, with evangelical sympathies. I love the Bible, and spend much time reading and studying it. However, the reason I could never describe myself as either Evangelical or Reformed is that I have never been conviced by the principle of 'sola scriptura', in particular I don't even think it is Biblical. However, if I ever mention this to my evangelical friends they find it very difficult to engage in a discussion about it. I understand this reaction since it goes right to the heart of their beliefs. Needless to say I would like to keep them as friends, so tend not to bring the topic up. So as I don't really know you from Adam, and you seem like you would not be offended (and since I couldnt seem to find an appropriate article already written by you), could you perhaps outline a defense of the principle of 'Sola Scriptura'? I look forward to hearing your comments.

Thanks for stopping by. I'm sorry to that there is no church in your neck of the woods that teaches sound doctrine. That's a difficult situation. Perhaps a bible study at your home will get things started. God Bless,

what a joy to see that "some" christians have not bowed the knee to baal. the article "general call vs. effectual call" was excellent. i'm a five point calvinist by the grace of God. my sadness is that there is no church (baptist, reformed or presbyterian) here in the rio grande valley, texas, that teaches these precious doctrines. pray that God in His grace and mercy will send us a pastor who still teaches "the doctrines of grace."
